Description
Longmeadow is a new farm in the Sooke River Valley that offers a wide variety of vegetables, berries, fruit, eggs, herbs, and flowers. The farm has applied for organic certification, and only uses organic regulated products for growing. Longmeadow Farm has a beautiful grassy meadow beside the river and some areas that are turned over to growing potatoes, corn, carrots and pumpkins. The farmhouse and main growing area are on the second level above the river, including a tunnel for tomatoes and cucumbers, and other hothouse produce. Growing beds use the no-dig method, with compost and good soil placed on top of the very rocky ground. Longmeadow’s philosophy is to work with the land, respecting the local environment, and preserving and enhancing habitat for local flora and fauna. The farm is also focused on composting and building the organic matter and nutrients in the soil.
